From Efficient Search to Incremental Growth

Croud

Space NK’s paid search programme appeared successful by conventional measures, but closer analysis revealed a more fundamental challenge: too much investment was capturing demand from existing customers rather than creating profitable, incremental growth. Croud’s brief was therefore to transform paid search from an efficient conversion channel into a more powerful new-customer acquisition engine.

Using its Return on Intelligence framework, Croud connected customer insight, commercial priorities and search data to redefine what the channel should optimise towards. Instead of treating every conversion equally, the team built a customer-value operating model that prioritised first-time buyers and distinguished between sales that paid search was merely capturing and growth it was actively creating.

The strategy combined customer lifetime-value signals, a commercially led campaign structure and closer collaboration with Space NK’s CRM and commercial teams. Investment was redirected towards the brands and campaign groups most likely to recruit valuable new customers, while lower-incrementality activity was deliberately reduced. Ongoing testing ensured decisions remained responsive to customer forecasts, category trends and emerging demand.

The result was a fundamental shift in how Space NK evaluates paid search: from traffic, conversions and short-term efficiency to incrementality, customer quality and long-term value. The approach established a smarter, more commercially focused model for acquisition and a new standard for paid search optimisation.
