Cooler than Compatibles: How Nespresso made a data-driven iced coffee comeback

OpenMind,a WPP Media brand

After 30 years in the UK, Nespresso is the undisputed icon of premium, home-brewed coffee. However, a major market shift emerged: many Nespresso Original machine owners were buying cheaper, compatible third-party pods from supermarkets for convenience and price, despite lacking Nespresso’s signature quality. As a direct-to-consumer (D2C) brand, Nespresso had a critical blind spot- it could not track or target these supermarket shoppers.

To win them back, Nespresso pioneered a revolutionary, data-driven strategy. By leveraging WPP’s Open Intelligence for Commerce, the brand unlocked SKU-level transactional data from premium online grocer Ocado via a secure InfoSum clean-room. For the first time, Nespresso identified and mapped verified, lapsed capsule buyers who were purchasing competitor pods.

Fronted by David Beckham, the stylish ‘Iced Summer’ social campaign then intercepted this high-value audience on Meta reinforcing the reasons to reconsider. This landmark campaign successfully turned a retail blind spot into a scalable, high-performing commerce acquisition model, proving that data-driven precision can flawlessly reunite lapsed coffee lovers with the premium quality their Nespresso machines deserve.
